ChoraleGUIDE: writing four-part harmony in the style of Bach

Bach modulation examples (two or three simple phrases)

Use the questions in the Two or Three Phrase Extracts log to guide your exploration of these extracts from Bach's chorale harmonisations. If you've not got your logbook handy, you can download the relevant page HERE. You will find that the majority of the three phrase examples are phrase modulations - there are more pivot modulation on the more complex models of modulations page.

Once you have completed your examination of these examples, have a go at some phrase worksheets that contain modulations.

In some of these examples Bach does something that is interesting and unusual - this point in the chorale is marked with a  . If you are curious it would be a good idea to work out what Bach does (e.g. treat a dissonance unconventionally or use a strange chord) and speculate as to why (e.g. to avoid parallel fifths or to improve the progression of harmonies). You should only incorporate such features in your own chorales if you properly understand what the problem is and how it is solved.
